Are you clear that you are “energy in action”? When you feel “out of balance”, do you ignore it, get busy, or go within to heal? The big question… western medicine or eastern healing… how do we not throw out the baby with the bath water?
Monday’s radio guest, LaGenia Bailey, RYT, Pharm.D, BCPP will help us answer that question by bridging the gap between Eastern Modalities and Western Medicine.

In college, LaGenia originally studied pharmacognosy (the science concerned with the pharmacologically active components of plants and herbs) but went into clinical practice because she enjoyed interacting with the patients and families. She graduated in 1986 with a doctorate in pharmacy, completed her residency and fellowship in psychopharmacology, and began working with the severely mentally ill, mostly people with schizophrenia who had not responded to medication. From 1988 to 1998, she worked as a clinical pharmacist in psychiatry, teaching pharmacology to medical, nursing and pharmacy students at the University of Illinois at Chicago and advising physicians about the use of medication for the treatment of various mental illnesses.
In her private practice, called East West Healing Arts & Yoga, LaGenia sees people who have injuries or want to make positive health changes. Depending on a client’s needs and goals, she may recommend herbs, yoga, pranic healing or sound therapy. As a scientist (and a singer), she became interested in how sound is used for healing. She explains that sound is vibration, vibration is the transmission of energy over a sound wave and sound (or vibration) can affect matter. Molecules work in union, she says, and the spaces between the molecules are what form the density of matter. When one part of the body, for example, becomes out of synch (dis-eased), the matter in that area becomes more dense and energy becomes blocked. Vibration of that matter–through sound–can help restore it to harmony.
LaGenia credits science for Eastern philosophy having taken hold in Western culture. Two hundred years ago, Westerners saw matter as a finite substance that could not be influenced. Einstein started looking at matter as a fluid substance that could be influenced and discovered that the density of matter was related to the molecules and the space and energy between them. Energy is changeable. “The sages in the Vedas knew that 5,000 years ago,” says LaGenia. “It is science that has brought us to a higher plane.”
What’s next for LaGenia? She is working on a book that bridges yoga and science, with a working title of The Pharmacology of Yoga, in which she looks at scientific studies of the therapeutic effects of yoga.
